“There’s something here!” she yelled. She kneeled down and scrabbled in the soil with her fingers. But all she found was an old, metal bottle top. “That’s not it,” she said, as she threw it to one side in disgust.

John waved the metal detector over it. The machine bleeped in exactly the same way it had before. Then he waved it over the hole and there was a horrible silence. “Sorry,” he said, as his ears turned pink with embarrassment. “False alarm. There’s nothing else there.”

He started to search again, walking slowly back towards the oaks. For a long time, he worked in silence. Then the metal detector bleeped again.

“I hope this really is the treasure,” said Ellie, as she and Kate started to dig again. But it wasn’t. This time all they found was a rusty nail.

Kate gave an exaggerated yawn. “That’s even less exciting than the bottle top.”

“No, it’s not,” said John, looking at it carefully. “This isn’t any old nail. It’s a nail from a horseshoe. You can tell by its shape.”

“But it’s still not treasure,” said Ellie.

“I’m sure we’ll find the real thing soon,” said John, as he started to search again. But he sounded slightly less confident than he had before.

“I hope we won’t have to dig too many holes,” said Kate. “I’m getting tired.”

“So am I,” said Ellie. “Let’s have a rest.”

They wandered back to the copse and checked that the ponies were all right. Then they sat down on a tree stump and watched John waving the metal detector around.
